My life growing up wasn’t that different than other colored boys coming up in New Orleans in the 40’s. My mother worked as a housekeeper for a wealthy white family, the Caskgill Family. The Caskgill’s lived in a large plantation house just up the road a ways from our house. Our house, which was left to my Mama by my Grandmother when she passed in ’41, was just like every other house on my street. The houses were really just clapboard shacks, all painted neutral colors, usually white, and had only 3 rooms: a bedroom, a bathroom and a living/dining/kitchen combo. These houses, which were still occupied only by colored folks, used to be the slave quarters back when the Caskgill house was a working plantation.
The houses were given as gifts to the slaves who chose to stay on and work the sugar fields after the Thirteenth Amendment. My great Grandfather was one of those that stayed, as, having been taken from his real family at the age of six, had nowhere else to go. So our family had been here for generations. It was a good location as well, Read more…

What parents need to know about their children with Dyspraxia

by Brandon E. Knight

What is ‘Dyspraxia?’ Well according to dyspraxiausa.org, “Developmental Dyspraxia (also known as Developmental Co-ordination Disorder, and the Clumsy Child Syndrome) is a neurologically based disorder of the processes involved in praxis or the planning of movement to achieve a predetermined idea or purpose, which may affect the acquisition of new skills and the execution of those already learned.”

In other words, Dyspraxia is an impairment, or an immaturity in the way the brain Read more…

American Fast Food: Exploiting Our Desire To Be Healthy

Over the last several years, there has been a lot of talk about the effects of fast food on the health of the American people. Dozens, possibly even hundreds of authors, television personalities and filmmakers have spoken on the unhealthy consequences of making bad choices in our eating habits when dining out, which has led to more diet friendly items being introduced to almost every restaurant menu across America. From salads and fresh fruit to yogurt and bottled water, it seems that every major brand in the fast food industry is cashing in on our desire to live healthier lifestyles by giving us an array of choices to satisfy even the most nutritious minded consumer.

But are these companies seriously intent on helping us fight the battle of the bulge, or are they merely exploiting us and our need to be thin to expand their profits? Read more…

Pretty Labels (Poem)

I stood by a store window,

With a smile on my face,

A sweet lady stops and says,

“Son, you seem out of place”

I point in at the garments,

“Ma’am, don’t you see?

All those pretty little labels,

Are a reflection of me,

Those labels are power, Read more…

Unwelcome Home (Poem)

Dreaming Of Me (Poem)

I’m Floating, and all the pretty people stare,

In their tuxedos and gowns,

I must look like a clown,

I’m ragged, tired, damaged,

torn,

I’m Beautiful,

I’m shaken, beat down and strung out, Read more…

I am sooo tired…and hopeful :-)

So I am about to go to bed, it’s 3:55 A.M. and it has been a LONG day. Went to look at commercial places for the restaurant with no luck. Lord help me! I feel as though I have the full support of my friends and family, but none of them are really in a position to help me. I feel as though I’ve completely bailed on my book, as 3 weeks have gone by and I haven’t written a word. I have stared at the pages a few times, but I am feeling disconnected from my own novel, as though i am reading something someone else wrote (and just not getting it, to be honest).

Back at it again…

Hello, cyberworld. It has been a VERY long time since I have posted anything on WordPress. I have just been very busy working a full time job, trying to write a novel, still trying to open a restaurant, and have a social life. It’s been crazy, but I have decided to start blogging again. I have deleted all of my old posts and am starting all over again. I hope anyone who reads my posts and finds them interesting will comment, subscribe, and/or email me so I know that someone is listening, lol. Well, that’s all for now.
